what is historical place in Delhi

Delhi is home to numerous historic places that should not be missed by any history fanatic.

One of the most renowned historical landmarks in Delhi is the Red Fort, where Jawaharlal Nehru declared India’s independence from Britain. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site and home to several museums, it has long been one of the city’s iconic structures.

Qutub Minar

One of the most iconic monuments in Delhi, Qutub Minar stands as one of its signature landmarks. Constructed to mark Muslim rule’s victory over local Hindu kings during the 11th century, this tower was completed over multiple phases by successive rulers over time – its initial story built by Qutub-Ud-Din Aibak was followed by three more layers being added by Iltutmish before Lodi Dynasty rebuilt large sections following earthquake and lightning damage.

The top two floors of Qutub Tower are constructed from marble while its lower levels feature fluted sandstone, standing the test of time as an important historical site. Part of Qutub Complex which also houses madrasa, mosque and water tank – Qutub Complex should not be missed by history lovers!

Humayun’s Tomb

Humayun’s Tomb is one of the earliest and finest examples of garden tombs characteristic of Mughal-era architecture, making it a UNESCO World Heritage Site and designed by Persian architect Mirak Mirza Ghiyas. The design features a ninefold square plan with 124 vaulted chambers. Additionally, each facade of its four facades contains an iwan that features eight two-storeyed vaulted chambers radiating outward from it.

Charbagh Gardens surround the tomb, making it easily accessible from Jor Bagh metro station. Visitors can admire the attractive gates before reaching its main hall containing Emperor Humayun’s first wife Haji Begum’s tomb.

Lal Qila

Delhi has a rich history dating back millennia. Dynasties that ruled this capital city of India have left their imprint through monuments and structures which now comprise some UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Qutub Minar is one such monument. Initially constructed by Qutb-ud-din Aibak – founder of Delhi Sultanate – this world-famous brick tower underwent several reconstructions and refurbishments during his rule and through subsequent ones under successor rule.

Humayun’s Tomb, constructed during the 16th century and one of UNESCO World Heritage sites since 1982, stands as an early example of Mughal architecture that ultimately led to its influence in Taj Mahal construction. Additionally, its tranquil gardens offer respite from bustling city life.

Rai Pithora

Rai Pithora was the original city of Delhi! Established by Tomar Rajput king Anangpal Tomar between 1052-1060 CE, its location was moved from Qutb Minar complex for better defense purposes to this rocky outcrop nearby for optimal defence measures.

This site also witnessed the construction of temples that are now lost; however, its memory lives on thanks to an iconic Iron Pillar which defies time’s effects and remains unscathed by corrosion!

Visit this monument during a heritage tour of Delhi for an experience to remember as it displays an exquisite blend of various styles of architecture – it served as the source of inspiration for Taj Mahal! Also on tour, is Sikandar Lodi tomb which houses the mortal remains of Lodi’s second ruler; an essential visit.

Tughlaqabad

Firoz Shah endeavored to restore order following Muhammad bin Tughlaq’s unstable reign by creating Tughlaqabad fort. An impressive military style design with high walls, palaces, pillared halls, mosques and even a pigeon tower made this impressive structure the centerpiece of Firoz Shah’s regime.

Fortification was also a vital element of city defences; designed so enemies could easily be identified and attacked from its semicircular bastions.

Legend holds that Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq’s death and abandonment of Tughlaqabad fort were caused by an evil curse/prophesy by Sufi mystic Nizam-ud-din, whom the Sultan had fallen out with over his demand to stop work on his dream project of building a step well.
