Haunted places can be defined as any location believed to be home to spirits that can be felt through various means, including slamming doors and voices.

Some places are said to be haunted by ghosts of those who died there; whether playful or frightening, their spirits remain ever present and remain visible.

1. It is a place of death

Ed and Lorraine Warren made this Long Island house world-famous when it was featured in a1979 movie, “The Amityville Horror”. Claiming that they had been overcome by evil spirits while living there in 1975, the couple claimed they left screaming before publishing a book detailing their experience, signing a movie deal and still consulting on paranormal claims worldwide.

J.P. Morgan’s stately mansion, once home to Alice Morgan who perished from typhoid fever, is said to be haunted by her ghost and other apparitions who are said to adorn the estate.

Other unsettling residents include a headless British soldier from the Revolutionary War who can often be heard roaming around on foggy nights, as well as a woman screams and bangs on doors in the dining room, while on certain evenings she can even be spotted walking through the kitchen!

2. It is a place of pain

Haunted places are thought to be home to the disembodied spirits of deceased residents who once resided there. These entities may appear unpleasant or even dangerous and manifest as unexplained noises, smells and feelings of fear; usually the more intense the haunting occurs the more serious it is taken as evidence.

Port Arthur prison in Australia stands out as an especially frightening location, leading numerous inmates to commit suicide and leaving its halls with ghostly inmates still roaming about in hooded forms.

Another renowned haunted location in New York City is the Dakota Building, the site where John Lennon was murdered by Mark Chapman in 1980. It is also rumored to be haunted by Sid Vicious, Nancy Spungen, as well as numerous eerie figures.

At notable figure is La Dame Verte (Green Lady) who wears a green dress but lacks eyes and nose; she often can be seen there dressed like this and in other places! Marie Tussaud’s wax museum also has been said to be haunted by the Green Lady often seen wearing green attire but lacking either her eyes, nose or other features!

3. It is a place of sorrow

Places of sorrow often leave behind haunted remnants from those who died tragically, such as Netherworld on its outskirts of Atlanta. An attraction so terrifying it should not be visited by those with heart conditions; with 3D effects, aerial performers, and flesh-eating clowns to keep visitors at bay!

A mansion once owned by J.P. Morgan is  believed to be haunted by his daughter. According to Haunted Places: The National Directory, she can often be seen roaming around and has startled witnesses who have come into the home. Her spirit may just be delusional but has caused shock as it has been witnessed many times by them.

Long Island’s former psychiatric facility is said to be haunted by the spirits of patients who took their own lives there, making this terrifying house an absolute must for haunted tourists. Many have reported witnessing ghostly figures in this haunted building including one woman who fell down the stairs and one young boy who was hanged – reports which are corroborated by multiple people seeing ghosts themselves within its walls.

4. It is a place of fear

An unsettling location can be terrifying; whether the site of murder, disease-ridden environments or where legendary figures were laid to rest; whatever its source may be it remains a place where ghostly figures may still linger in some capacity and their spirits can be felt or heard today.

Many haunted places exist, while others may be the result of hallucinations, cold spots or environmental effects. Paranormal experiences tend to occur more frequently when individuals are sleep deprived or drunk.

Ryves Holt House in Delaware is said to be haunted by Susan, one of several ghosts said to reside within its walls. Meanwhile, The Dakota is home of where John Lennon was shot dead and reported seen by Yoko Ono; or consider Netherworld in Georgia which offers visitors an adrenaline rush with its frightening labyrinth that scares visitors effectively enough that adrenaline levels often skyrocket after visiting.
