Charminar
Charminar’s history is truly fascinating. Constructed in 1591 by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah – fifth ruler of Qutb Shahi Dynasty -it stands as an impressive pillar-and-moadha structure listed under Archaeological Survey of India.
Although numerous theories exist as to the purpose of its construction, one popular belief is that it was made as a memorial for an end to a plague epidemic. According to legend, when this illness finally subsided he built this landmark as an act of thanks.
This imposing monument with four minarets on each of its sides has become the signature landmark of Hyderabad, drawing visitors from far and wide. A popular tourist destination and home for local markets alike, it makes an enjoyable visit.
Mecca Masjid
Charminar stands as an iconic landmark of Hyderabad, dominating the city centre. Even when surrounded by bustling traffic, Charminar still commands your attention as an impressive piece of craftsmanship and art.
One of India’s oldest and largest mosques was constructed by Muhammad Quli Qutub Shah – the fifth ruler in his dynasty of Qutub Shahi Dynasty – using soil from Mecca as its foundation – one reason it got its name.
Get lost in Hyderabad’s heritage landscape of grand mosques, old-world bazaars and majestic forts coexisting in harmony. Be amazed by the architectural finesse and cultural significance of iconic structures like Qutub Shahi Tombs, Chowmahalla Palace, Mecca Masjid and Purani Haveli to name just a few.
Qutub Shahi Tombs
Qutub Shahi Tombs are among Hyderabad’s most notable Islamic historical monuments, situated within walking distance of Golconda Fort. A mausoleum complex that features mausoleums, mortuary bath, mosques and an elaborate complex decorated with buildings inspired by Persian, Pathan and Hindu architectural styles adorn this monumental complex.
These tombs represent the Qutb Shahi Dynasty which ruled from 1518-1687 AD and were added to UNESCO’s Tentative List of World Heritage Sites in 2010.
Sultan Quli Qutb-ul-Mulk’s tomb is among the first and most typical, featuring an octagonal tomb chamber with Naskh and Thuluth script inscriptions in an octagonal chamber, while Sultan Ibrahim Qutb Shah’s tomb is slightly larger and features remnants of enameled tiles on its southern wall. All other tombs lack any inscribed text.
Golconda Fort
Golconda Fort is an architectural marvel which has stood the test of time. Built by multiple dynasties – such as Qutb Shahi kings and earlier Kakatiya rulers – its legacy endures.
Legend claims that during Kakatiya rule, a shepherd boy discovered an idol on this hill; hence its current name of Golla Konda or Shepherd’s Hill. Later rulers from Bahmani Sultanate and Qutub Shahi Kings transformed this mud fort into a massive granite structure with a 5-kilometer circumference ring for defense purposes.
Fort Ibri is well-known for its remarkable acoustic system; when you clap at certain spots near the dome entrance, your sound reverberates clearly to Bala Hisar nearly one kilometer away! An absolute must-visit for history enthusiasts; even better still if you enjoy light and sound shows!
Purani Haveli
Purani Haveli (also known as Haveli Khadeem), situated just southeast of Afzal Gunj Bridge near Dewandevi, showcases the Nizams’ architectural magnificence. This beautiful palace combines traditional Indian courtyards with 18th-century European facades, and displays intricate carvings for added charm.
Once a residence of the Nizams of Hyderabad, this haveli now houses their Museum. Here visitors can gain an insight into their extravagant lifestyle.
Nearby, tourists can immerse themselves in the spiritual and architectural splendor of Mecca Masjid and explore Salar Jung Museum’s extensive collection. Charminar stands as an iconic landmark and offers stunning views from its summit; visitors may also explore shopping opportunities in Laad Bazaar.
