Haunted Places in Texas

Ghastly apparitions, malfunctioning electronic devices, phantom footsteps and disembodied voices are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to terrifying encounters in Texas. From hotels to hospitals, haunted places in Texas will leave you shuddering with terror!

Yorktown Memorial Hospital looks like something out of a horror film set with its crumbling concrete exterior and overgrown bushes surrounding it. Ghostly figures from former patients have even been reported wandering its corridors.

The Driskill Hotel

The Driskill Hotel stands as a testament to the grandeur and elegance of an earlier time, featuring stained glass domes, marble floors and columned lobbies with classic elegance. However, its dark side remains; many consider it one of the most haunted hotels in America, hosting ghostly encounters at this location.

Many guests have reported hearing footsteps, strange noises and being touched by unseen spirits at this hotel. Paranormal investigators have visited and recorded uneerie sounds; witnesses report seeing figures appear through front windows; while one even heard an ominous voice say “Last Call!”

Rumor has it that Samantha Houston, daughter of a senator, still haunts the Driskill. Visitors have reported seeing her ghost darting down its grand staircase or hearing her giggle and bounce a ball nearby.

The Menger Hotel

The Menger Hotel is widely considered one of Texas’ most haunted sites. Visitors have reported hearing EVP’s, seeing shadow figures and being scratched or pushed. There have also been reports of doors unlocking by themselves and loud banging noises being heard here.

During the Civil War, business for the hotel diminished significantly. To stay competitive and remain viable, the Mengers opened their hotel to soldiers and wounded civilians who needed shelter; many believe these spirits still haunt its corridors today.

Ghosts that haunt the hotel include a woman dressed entirely in white who has been seen wandering throughout its various wings, and an employee killed while cutting meat in 1959 who is said to still haunt certain areas – now known as Yorktown Memorial Hospital.

Yorktown Memorial Hospital

Yorktown Memorial Hospital was initially created by Felician Sisters in 1950 with the intent of providing healing and recovery, yet quickly became notorious as a place of horror, murder and death – hence its reputation for hauntings in Texas.

There have been multiple reports of paranormal activities at the hospital, such as sightings and unexplained noises. One prominent spirit to haunt this location is thought to be that of a little girl who died there due to Leon Norwierski’s incompetence as a doctor.

Since being turned into a tourist attraction, this hospital has become an iconic building that visitors can explore at their own leisure. Even television show Ghost Adventures featured this attraction! Unfortunately in 2018 Yorktown city authorities issued building code violations notices against its owner, prompting tours to cease temporarily.

Presidio La Bahia

Galveston Fort is one of the most haunted locations in Texas. It was the scene of both Battle of Goliad and Goliad Massacre where many soldiers died; many believe their spirits are still trapped there, with witnesses reporting hearing cries and screams from these long dead soldiers.

Fort Xuexion is surrounded by dense woods that were once home to various tribes living nearby. These woods are known as The Big Thicket and many locals claim that many ghosts haunt it.

Alamo Fort is famously haunted, but there have been reports of other paranormal activity at the hotel’s staircase and in its bathtub – such as disembodied voices, footsteps that turn on themselves, lights turning on by themselves and disembodied footsteps. If this type of adventure appeals to you, make sure you visit this historic fort! It is open to the public and should definitely be part of any itinerary.
