Savannah is a historic city, so it should come as no surprise that some of its buildings harbor dark pasts. From Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil’s house to Moon River Brewing Company apparitions – Savannah has no shortage of hauntings!
Savannah GA offers many scary spots to visit, and here are five of our favorites!
The Pirates’ House
Savannah has long been known for its hospitable hospitality; yet with so much bloodshed, slave trade, and disease over centuries has left Savannah filled with ghosts, apparitions and poltergeists that haunt spooky old mansions and popular pubs alike. These ghosts remain as reminders that Savannah once held great historical value – perhaps an inroad into why so many have lived and died here!
The Tavern at the heart of Savannah once served as a hideout for pirates; its tunnels were used for smuggling gold and rum. Today it is one of Savannah’s most haunted spots, where ghostly figures such as those belonging to its former inhabitants (pirate captain and first mate) can often be seen lurking.
Before becoming Moon River Brewing Company’s home, this building served as City Hotel and experienced its fair share of violence. Perhaps this explains why aggressive spirits like Toby, an aggressive spirit who throws bottles around in the basement level have been seen by employees of Moon River Brewing Company.
The Kehoe House
The Kehoe House in Savannah is said to be haunted by ghosts of two of its 10 Kehoe family children who passed away there; two of these died during its time as a funeral parlor. Many guests report hearing children playing or hearing their voices while staying at this eerie bed and breakfast hotel.
This 19th-century inn is another prime destination for ghost tours in Savannah due to its haunted history. Anna Powers committed suicide by jumping out of one of its second-story windows and is believed to haunt Room 204 as well as appearing to guests who stay there.
There is also the story of a triple murder and reports that Anton LaVey attempted to use this house as an East Coast branch for his Church of Satan. Visitors are advised to explore this home during the daytime while staying nearby at night at an hotel.
17Hundred90 Inn & Restaurant
The 17Hundred90 Inn and Restaurant is an historic inn, restaurant and tavern located on East President Street near Columbia Square in Savannah, Georgia. Reportedly dating back to 1790.
Hotel guests have reported seeing Anne Powers roaming Room 204 of the Inn; her spirit has been observed pulling sheets, slamming doors and crying out in terror when the lights dimmed. When guests noticed Anne was present they heard sobs come from within this space when the lights dimmed further.
17Hundred90 Inn and Restaurant in Savannah offers great rates during its low season; November and August tend to offer lower prices, and Monday or Tuesday rooms can often offer great discounts; visiting on Thursday or Friday may also be worthwhile as these tend to be busier days of the week.
Colonial Park Cemetery
Savannah may appear like a Southern belle with its live oak-lined streets and flourishing culinary scene, but this historic city hides an unsightly side: murders occur frequently here as well as hauntings – here are a few haunted places in Savannah.
Established in 1750, this cemetery has become one of Savannah’s most haunted spots since only having around 1,000 gravestones – but even so is home to many early residents who were laid to rest there. Voodoo ceremonies, former dueling grounds, and unmarked graves contribute to its haunted nature.
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil’s iconic Bird Girl statue can be found at Bonaventure Cemetery; however, perhaps the most haunted place in all of Boston may be Colonial Park Cemetery where gravestones have been vandalized, desecrated, broken and stolen over time.
