Mansfield Reformatory
Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield is an impressive limestone prison widely considered one of the most haunted places in Ohio. Built during the late 19th century as an intermediate penitentiary for offenders who may be reformable through religion, education or trade practices.
Unfortunately, due to poor sanitary conditions at the reformatory, infections such as tuberculosis and influenza were prevalent. Violence between inmates was common; prisoners would frequently beat each other up and be mistreated by guards; one of the more cruel punishments included throwing someone into “The Hole,” an oppressively dark solitary confinement cell.
Visitors and staff have reported experiencing unexplained sounds, shadows and apparitions while touring this former prison. Furthermore, this location has even been featured in movies like “The Shawshank Redemption.”
Eden Park
Eden Park in Cincinnati offers something for every visitor. This urban park offers scenic city and river overlooks, an idyllic lake, numerous nature trails and even its own sinister history which may send chills down visitors’ spines.
Imogene Remus, wife of famed attorney, pharmacist, and bootlegger George Remus is said to haunt Mirror Lake near Eden Park’s gazebo near Mirror House Gazebo. After George had been released from jail he hired a chauffeur to accompany Imogene in her taxi as she made her way towards court for finalizing their divorce settlement; George then ran it off the road before firing two shots into Imogene at Spring House Gazebo and shot her.
Locals claim her ghost still haunts the gazebo and her presence can be felt by visitors at night. Local legend has it that she remains angry over how her husband got away with murdering his daughter-in-law.
