Haunted Places in Ohio

Every October, people look for thrills and chills. From visiting haunted houses, reading ghost stories or watching scary movies – people look for thrills.

Tyler Proffet, editor of Let’s Roam Explorer, reports a few trends at Ohio attractions this year.

Made famous in The Shawshank Redemption, Mansfield’s Ohio State Reformatory started out as an idealistic experiment before overcrowding resulted in violence, suicides and even rioting. Nowadays it draws paranormal TV shows as well as thousands of haunt hunters every year.

Old Governor’s Mansion

The Old Governor’s Mansion boasts a long and storied past, as well as many ghostly tales. Retired governors’ state residence is said to be haunted by an old-fashioned lady dressed like she lost her child; staff have reported hearing screams and moans along with doors opening and closing on their own and strange smells of burning hair and smoke being detected in certain areas of the mansion.

Green Lawn Cemetery is said to be haunted by a Lady in Gray who weeps silently. Other paranormal experiences at this cemetery have included shadowy figures and flickering lights.

Other notable haunted locations in Ohio are Thurber House and Peabody Hall at Miami University, as well as Watkins Road Bridge which may be haunted by a woman who died in a car accident.

Mirror Lake

At Ohio State University’s Mirror Lake is said to be haunted by the ghost of a sorority girl who drowned after engaging in underage drinking, leaving frantic splashing and muffled screaming sounds behind her in the water – the lake surface itself may reflect these happenings! Visitors have reported hearing frantic splashing sounds as well as muffled screaming.

Ohio State Reformatory stands out as another one of Ohio’s haunted locations, drawing paranormal enthusiasts from all around the country. It has even been featured on television programs. There have been unexplained events at this prison including sightings and noises coming from “the hole”, an underground cell.

With Ohio being filled with plenty of eerie spots, Halloween has long been celebrated! In order to commemorate this festive holiday, Let’s Roam is hosting a Halloween Scavenger Hunt across Ohio!

Children’s Hospital

Children’s hospitals might seem an unlikely setting for ghosts, but many hospitals were once sites of horrific crimes against orphans that have since left ghosts roaming its halls – sometimes even engaging visitors! Spirits from these children continue to roam these halls today! Some even interact with visitors!

This haunted asylum was intended to aid mentally ill patients, but instead was subject to cruel treatments that led to many dying and being buried unmarked graves. Many restless spirits are said to haunt this location including one woman who waves greetings at visitors from her room.

Old Ohio Penitentiary

Fires, executions, disease and suicide were just a few of the many threats facing this facility over its many years of operation, yet its spirit still haunted it even after its official closing date.

This massive Romanesque building has become famous for hosting ghost tours and paranormal investigations, even being featured on several paranormal television shows. Many visitors report hearing footsteps scuffling across the floor, knocks that cannot be explained and disembodied voices; feeling coldness or being pushed by unseen forces are also reported by visitors.

Old Ohio Penitentiary is famously haunted by multiple-personality rapist Billy Milligan. But other reported hauntings at this place include a ghostly black lady and male spirits that roam its halls – not to mention several mysterious sightings at Ridges Prison itself!

Majestic Theatre

Since 1853, when its doors first opened as the Majestic Theatre, this building has been an entertainment mecca and source of great pleasure for visitors to its hallowed halls. But visitors have also reported witnessing strange phenomena here – from crying babies to orbs of light and even sightings of an unidentified gray-clad lady!

The Majestic is one of Ohio’s most haunted spots, having been featured in multiple paranormal shows. One fascinating ghost story revolves around a young girl thought to be haunting the building; other paranormal activities at The Majestic include feelings of being watched and mist or shadow apparitions that appear periodically throughout its walls.
