The Old Governor’s Mansion
Ohio offers plenty for those wanting to experience paranormal activity. Home to numerous haunted locations ranging from houses where people died to haunted prisons where spirits remain, Ohio offers plenty of opportunity for paranormal investigators.
One of Ohio’s most infamous haunted locations is the Old Governor’s Mansion, a former Governor’s residence and now known for being haunted by an African American woman in 1800s clothing who can often be found causing mischief by knocking paintings off walls and pulling up any rugs she doesn’t approve of.
Ohio is home to numerous haunted places, with one notable location being North Market in Columbus. According to reports, apparitions from former employees can often be seen riding elevators and changing time on clocks – an experience some visitors claim they had.
The Athens Asylum

Once known as an asylum for mental patients, this former mental hospital was home to Billy Milligan – known for multiple personalities including rapist Billy – whose ghost supposedly haunts it today, causing unexplained noises and sightings in its halls.
The Ridges is believed to be haunted by spirits of patients who committed suicide during its early 1900s heydays, with Simms Cemetery said to host particularly creepy ghostly presences rumored to roam its grounds.

The Old Confederate Cemetery

One of Ohio’s most haunted places, Old Confederate Cemetery is one of its most terrifying haunted locations. This graveyard honors 206 Civil War soldiers buried here after having spent time at Johnson’s Island a former prison. While their remains may lie here now, some believe their spirits remain haunting its grounds.
Paranormal activity at this location includes unexplained noises, slamming doors, and sightings of ghosts who once resided there. Furthermore, it is believed that there is an unseen force who judges the decor of homes by knocking paintings off of walls or rolling up rugs that she finds offensive.
State Route 29
Just north of London lies an eerie plot of land situated between two cornfields that is considered one of Ohio’s most haunted places. Visitors have reported hearing gunshots and disembodied screaming during late-night visits.
Franklin Castle was constructed during the mid 1800s, boasting 21 rooms and an expansive estate featuring a fourth-floor ballroom, marble fireplaces and dumbwaiters. According to legend, Franklin Castle may be haunted by three children who perished during construction as well as Louise who was accidentally buried alive.

Ohio residents have an esteemed reputation as some of the nation’s friendliest people, and that appears to extend into ghostly realm. Ohio is home to numerous friendly ghostly figures that may include family members that died peacefully while sleeping, an environmental writer’s spirit, or someone that politely declines offers for rides.
Van Wagener Road is one of the state’s most haunted spots, where locals report seeing a woman wearing white nightgown flagging down drivers to ask for assistance. Some believe she was killed in her house nearby but no charges have been brought against anyone for this crime.
As Halloween season progresses, haunted houses must get creative to effectively scare their visitors. Tyler noted that more haunts are adding elements such as bars, food trucks, escape rooms and interactive elements into their haunts to keep customers entertained all night long.
