Ohio is full of creepy spots where ghosts like to hang out, from haunted houses and the creepy tunnels of state parks, all the way down to haunted tunnels with mysterious legends attached.
Ohio is known for being haunted by some of the state’s deceased inhabitants who appear to live up to their noble reputation as ghosts. Some haunted locations include The Ridges and Boston Mills.
Athens Lunatic Asylum
Athens, Ohio boasts several haunted spots that will give you chills. One such haunted location is Athens Lunatic Asylum (commonly referred to as The Ridges), featured on paranormal TV shows as one of the world’s most authentic haunted spots. Tours are available and ghost hunting events occur year-round at this campus.
Building was constructed in 1874, and its patients included psychiatric patients, Civil War veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), ward children, tuberculosis victims and violent criminals. Visitors frequently report hearing door slamming and hearing unexplained noises while touring campus grounds. Many witnesses also have experienced bizarre phenomena at this location – for instance slamming doors or unexplained sounds on campus grounds!
Boston Mills
As one of the scariest experiences in northwest Ohio, this haunted farm attraction will make your hair stand on end! A terrifying hayride filled with ghostly spirits, psychotic doctors, and machines with minds of their own awaits visitors at this haunted attraction.
Every year, hundreds of ghost hunters visit this Reformatory in Ohio’s Old Licking Jail Reformatory; several paranormal TV shows have even highlighted its attractions. Here, visitors often hear unexplained noises, cries and screams as well as sightings of Olevia scuffling about in prison halls and pulling sheets off guests for herself to wear!
Boston Mills has an eerie and mysterious past that lives up to its name, featuring tales of an undead train conductor and chemical spills – two events which have cemented its place as one of New Hampshire’s premier haunted destinations.
The Palace Theater
The Palace Theater has played host to some of the world’s most celebrated entertainers over time, such as Harry Houdini and Ethel Merman. Now it is said to be haunted by an unsettled funambulist or acrobat who falls off during performances, according to Nellie Kampmann – a Columbus resident and author of The Haunted History of the Theatre (CAPA publicist Rolanda Copley disputes this claim). Kampmann believes this ghost first made an appearance during a reopening party for renovated theatre after renovation work began on it – according to Nellie Kampmann this ghost made an initial appearance during its grand reopening party for renovated theatre renovation work was completed.
While this theater’s haunted theater may only seem real to first-time ghost explorers, its creepiness still makes for a terrifying atmosphere that should make them steer clear from it altogether. They could always explore nearby trails to try and capture Frank Lawhead’s ghost on camera instead.
Waverly Hills Sanatorium
Waverly Hills Sanatorium is one of the most haunted locations in America. Once used to treat tuberculosis patients, its historical building now serves as one of the country’s premier ghost haunting spots. At one time, treatment would include blood transfusions or surgical removal of lung tissue.
After the discovery of a vaccine, cases dramatically declined and in 1961 the sanatorium was closed down.
Tina and Charlie Mattingly purchased the property after it became abandoned, in 2001. Since then, tours are hosted there to raise money for maintenance. It has also been featured on various paranormal television shows including Ghost Hunters, Zone Reality’s Creepy, and Most Haunted; many consider its body chute particularly haunted.
Franklin Castle
Franklin Castle stands out among Cleveland haunted houses for its distinctive turrets and brick-red window frames, making it one of the most haunted homes. Built by Hannes Tiedemann in the 1880s, his children would all die mysterious deaths while living there.
House has been reported as being haunted by various spirits including a woman in black and crying girl in white, as well as an angry maid who believed Hannes cheated on her by having an offspring without their consent.
Now owned by a couple with plans to restore and convert it into a museum of curiosities, this house now offers overnight stays where visitors should bring notebook and pen with them to record any paranormal activity they observe.
