Haunted House Zavalla Texas

Screams filled Sheppard Air Force Base as darkness fell and Junior Enlisted Team Sheppard held its annual haunted house event to bring Airmen together and foster morale during Halloween season.

Rumor has it that the ghost of a man known for playing tricks may linger here; he’s known to make noise and run up and down stairs.

Killough Monument

On October 5, 1838, eighteen members of the Killough and Wood families vanished in what would later be known as the Killough Massacre, apparently killed or abducted by marauders disguised as Indians who attacked homesteaders clearing land for crops and homes in what is now Cherokee County, Texas.

Bodies were interred at this site where, during the 1930s, a stone obelisk was constructed by the Works Progress Administration and enclosed with fencing; descendants of victims have established a foundation to provide care on an ongoing basis for permanent care at this location approximately 15 minutes outside of Jacksonville on County Road 3411. A historical marker also commemorates this spot.

Killough University

Killough University’s haunted house features three attractions and is open on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights from 7 to 11 p.m. Tickets cost $7 per event or can be purchased for all three attractions for an affordable $18 ticket price – proceeds benefit the Hudson and Zavalla volunteer fire departments in California.

Killough led his Cardinals team to victory in the 2021 Southland Conference championship game and helped mold an outstanding wide receiver core, led by Tre Wolf and Robert Ferrel who combined for over 4,600 receiving yards and 48 touchdowns this season.

Killough hails from Mississippi and recently relocated to Philadelphia this summer. She enjoys living here and her neighbors have been friendly and accommodating.

Big Thicket National Preserve

The Big Thicket National Preserve offers an abundance of wildlife, making it a true biological crossroads in North America. Comprised of 15 units scattered throughout seven Southeast Texas counties and covering over 100,000 acres.

Big Thicket National Preserve stands apart from most parks by having several distinct ecosystems living together within its relatively small area. You’ll be able to spot desert plants like cacti near longleaf pine forests or roadrunners scurrying across beech-magnolia woodlands.

Big Thicket Park is home to an endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker bird that is currently under protection, and efforts are being undertaken to reintroduce him.

Bragg Road

Bragg Road runs ruler-straight through Hardin County’s swampy woods and was once part of a rail line connecting Bragg Station to Saratoga. Though its track has since been removed, its haunted nature remains. Nighttime sightings may reveal mysterious orbs floating just above the ground that claim lives here.

On All Hallows Eve, locals gather for drinks and stories of mysterious lights appearing along the road – also known as Big Thicket Light, Saratoga Light or Bragg Road Ghost Light.
