Come October, Michigan is known for its rich and mysterious past – from tales of haunted past places to terrifying tales from current residents. Here are five of Michigan’s most haunted spots!
From the Grand Hotel (built on top of an early military post’s cemetery) to Fort Mackinac – explored by SyFy Channel’s Ghost Hunters series – these locations will leave you shivering!
1. Michigan Bell Telephone Company
Michigan is filled with paranormal locations ranging from historic hotels, old cemeteries and asylums – many residents and visitors alike have reported terrifying experiences such as hearing voices or seeing ghostly figures in these settings.
Michigan Bell Telephone Company in Grand Haven is known to be haunted. The building sits on the site of Warren Randall’s former house; after losing his leg in an accident and killing Virginia out of jealous rage. Many believe their spirits still haunt this place today.
Others have reported hearing strange sounds, furniture moving on its own and doors opening and closing automatically in the building. Employees at this company report feeling fear and unease while working there.
2. Judd-White House
The Judd-White House in downtown Grand Rapids is an historic mansion which has long been thought of as haunted. According to legend, its ghosts include Warren Randall and Virginia, who both lost legs due to an unfortunate train accident; eventually Warren became resentful toward her and she left him; ultimately he murdered Virginia before hanging himself.
Visitors have reported hearing noises like footsteps and voices as well as seeing apparitions at the house, with lights flickering randomly and doors opening and closing on their own.
Michigan is home to numerous places considered haunted, including Holland Castle which is said to be haunted by a girl mourning for her lost love, Pere Cheney (once an industrial sawmill town that was devastated by diseases such as cholera and diphtheria), with many creepy buildings now serving as creepy haunted prison now known as Armory Arts Village as examples of haunted places in Michigan.
3. Old City Orphanage
The Old City Orphanage, situated in Marquette, Michigan is widely considered one of the most haunted places in Michigan. Due to its long history of abuse and tragedy, many ghosts may remain here; one haunting tale tells about a young boy being brutally assaulted by nuns at this orphanage.
Buildings formerly housing orphanages have since been turned into apartments, and residents have reported strange phenomena within them such as doors opening and closing on their own, footsteps walking through hallways, and mysterious apparitions.
Park Cemetery lies nearby the orphanage and also has its own peculiar hauntings. People visiting have noticed an open grave created for a boy who died due to mistreatment at the orphanage; shortly thereafter a green glow appeared in its basement before flowers covered the grave with reverence.
4. Elmwood Cemetery
Since 1872, this historic cemetery is considered one of Michigan’s most haunted spots. Many believe that spirits from those who have passed remain here and haunt certain areas like where Crouch family was brutally slaughtered in 1883 and St John Cemetery in Jackson.
Hauntings here include a mist that moves at night, apparitions and voices. Some visitors claim being touched by cold hands while others have heard utensils clattering when no one was around!
At Cottage Cemetery Office, it is believed that one of the most active ghosts is a friendly male spirit who keeps staff company and can sometimes be heard whistling to get his way out!
