Locals love this restaurant, offering classic Saigonese fare in a French colonial house setting. Enjoy dishes such as braised fish in clay pots, grilled squid with salt and chili, and classic Hanoi spring rolls.
Try their famous Bun Dau – an irresistibly delicious tofu dish served with rice noodles and either fish sauce or the spicy Mam Tom Shrimp Sauce – it’s an absolute must!
Ngon Restaurant
This Vietnamese restaurant can be found in the bustling heart of downtown, and it’s clear why it has quickly become one of the city’s busiest eateries. Housed in a converted colonial-style building with both indoor and outdoor seating spaces available for dining, this eatery specializes in dishes from both North and South Vietnam as well as seafood such as steamed mussels and grilled shrimp – plus plenty of vegetarian choices like stir-fried bok choy or sweet and sour eggplant for vegetarian diners to enjoy!
The Ngon Restaurant boasts an intimate space with wood booths designed for groups, as well as raised tables that accommodate couples or individuals. Open for lunch and dinner service, as well as delivery/takeout options, this authentic eatery provides great options.
Ngon Appetit stands out from many hole-in-the-wall eateries by being clean and spacious; not overrun with menus or mismatched trinkets; its staff was friendly and efficient, with the kitchen well organized. Unfortunately, however, their food didn’t live up to my expectations: for instance, their cha ca used monkfish instead of catfish; its flavor did not match that of being cooked over charcoal grill; additionally their banh mi sandwich differed significantly from tradition – with pork that didn’t taste of backyard grill flavor; and only mild pickled pickle tanginess was detected from within its usual array of pickled vegetables like daikon and carrots; unfortunately this time.
La Villa French Restaurant
Chef is the star of this restaurant, adding modern flair to classic Gallic dishes such as duck foie gras terrine made with poached figs poached in muscat and salted honey caramel, or pate en croute, lobster a la l’americaine and Grand Marnier souffle. Diners can take in these meals in either its parlor room with high ceilings and artwork or the garden, where lush vegetation surrounds diners for an idyllic dining experience – with its extensive wine list providing the perfect pairings!
Chef Thierry Mounon and Tina, his Vietnamese wife, have created a charming retreat in District 2, approximately 20 minutes by taxi ride from downtown. Choose between sitting indoors in an elegant parlor with high ceilings or outside on romantic and beautifully manicured garden grounds surrounded by sparkling pool; either way the a la carte and degustation menus provide an opportunity to sample French cuisine to the fullest. Don’t miss their artisanal cheese trolley and apple calvados Camembert!
