Tanzania offers an exotic array of cuisine, blending local flavors with international influences. From street vendors to fine dining establishments, every meal in Tanzania will delight the senses.
Tanzania’s best restaurants feature welcoming ambiances and outstanding service, and here are a few of our favorites:.
The Backyard
The Backyard is a beloved dining destination for locals and visitors alike, serving a selection of delectable Tanzanian cuisine in Dar es Salaam’s bustling culinary hub. Offering everything from seafood platters to satisfying meat dishes, this eatery has something deliciously tasty for every palate.
I found the host to be very helpful and friendly, while the place itself had an enjoyable ambience due to its prime location on the outskirts of the city. Overall, I would definitely recommend this hostel to anyone searching for an exceptional accommodation option at a competitive price point.
The Grand Restaurant
For an excellent nighttime dining experience in Tanzania, look no further than The Grand Restaurant at Harbour View Towers in Dar es Salaam. This diner serves Indian, Chinese, seafood and barbeque cuisine in an inviting space; open dining arrangement allows many diners to dine simultaneously and orders are taken quickly.
This outstanding culinary destination is well-known for its delectable menu that blends Tanzanian traditions with international fare. Their chefs utilize fresh ingredients in every dish for maximum flavor! This restaurant not only offers succulent seafood and flavorful grilled meats, but it also provides a selection of tasty vegetarian offerings. In addition, The Grand Restaurant provides an impressive array of drinks including speciality cocktail juices. Staff at this venue are dedicated to providing superior customer service, elevating the dining experience. Perfect for family dinners, romantic dates or casual get-togethers with friends; this establishment ranks among Tanzania’s finest for both its delectable cuisine and inviting ambience.
Onsea House Restaurant
Onsea House and Machweo Retreat have both provided welcome solutions in Tanzania’s safari capital of Arusha since their establishment. Both offer stylish boutique settings, are conveniently located and serve as ideal bases for Kilimanjaro climbs and Northern circuit safaris – what sets these places apart is their food – chef Axel has an exceptional talent and his menu ranks among the best nationwide.
Both properties are situated on hilltops just outside Arusha and offer stunning views. The Onsea House Country Inn features two rooms and a central swimming pool while Machweo Retreat boasts 9 more rooms, all featuring high quality facilities. Both properties provide a welcoming stay prior to or following an Arusha safari or Kilimanjaro trek combined with beach holiday extension on Zanzibar or mainland Tanzania.
Onsea House is an exquisite guesthouse. Each room is simple yet well designed and very comfortable; we especially appreciated that all have balconies offering breathtaking views of the countryside. Plus, its dining room makes the perfect spot to watch the sun go down over Mount Meru while sipping wine or having lunch!
Arusha Coffee Lodge’s Grill Room
Arusha Coffee Lodge offers a relaxing oasis away from the busy streets of central Arusha and within a working coffee plantation, ideal for anyone wanting a break in their Tanzania safari with some rest and tranquility. Spacious wooden chalets nestle into the plantation bushes offering amazing views of Mount Meru; additionally there’s a large deck, pool and spa that offer perfect opportunities to unwind after an exciting visit to Tanzania.
The hotel features an a la carte restaurant, cafe bistro and several boutique shops at Trader’s Walk. The restaurant boasts an international-inspired menu combined with fresh local ingredients. Meanwhile, The Grill Room provides an idyllic place for gathering with family or friends over an enjoyable meal.
The hotel also provides activities and tours, such as its popular “bean to cup” coffee estate tour which takes guests through its journey from farm to cup. Nearby Arusha National Park can also be explored as well as day trips to Ngorongoro Crater; all owned by Elewana Group who support their communities through various initiatives including nature conservation efforts and school/medical assistance for underprivileged children.
