There’s plenty of eerie things to see in New York, from screaming noises to ghostly orbs. These unearthly sights will leave your skin crawling with fear!
The Dakota is an eerie building where John Lennon was murdered; his widow Yoko Ono claims she has seen his spirit playing piano there! In addition, there’s also an orb with moving lights! And there’s even an eyeball!
1. Kings Park Psychiatric Facility
New York is known as an epicenter for paranormal activity and has been featured in countless horror movies throughout its history, from iconic classics such as Rosemary’s Baby to lesser known gems like Basket Case and Jacob’s Ladder.
Kings Park Psychiatric Facility on Long Island was in operation from 1885 to 1996 and today serves as an abandoned hospital that attracts urban explorers and ghost hunters alike.
It’s also widely considered to be haunted; Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen were murdered there by being stabbed.
2. Fort William Henry
Reenacting the fort that protected colonists during the 1757 Battle of Lake George, this museum boasts an eerie history of hauntings. Footsteps, apparitions and even gunpowder smell have all been reported as phenomena here; additionally candlelit guided ghost tours are offered.
Visitors report hearing footsteps, seeing apparitions and doors opening and closing on their own. A particularly nasty spirit known as The Limper is said to roam the building slamming doors and shoveing impatient tour guides around.
3. The Winery at Marjim Manor
At Marjim Manor Vineyard and Homestead near Appleton on Lake Ontario is a haunted vineyard and homestead that attracts paranormal investigators. Experience fruit wines while staying for hours to stay with original residents who may still reside on property – paranormal investigators say there may even be ghostly spirits!
Strange noises, poltergeist activity and ghost sightings are common at this stately former psychiatric hospital, which also served as an orphanage and tuberculosis clinic. According to reports by Yoko Ono she reportedly saw John Lennon’s ghost here.
4. The Elma Murder Well
Paranormal enthusiasts should visit this haunted location on Spring Street near COS clothing store; its sealed well was the scene of a grisly murder in 1799 and should not be overlooked!
Levi Weeks was charged with strangulating and throwing Elma Sands’ body in a well by Levi Weeks, another boarder in her boarding house. However, after only five minutes of deliberations by a jury panel he was found not guilty.
Many believe Elma Sands still haunts her former home; staff and visitors have reported seeing glasses, plates, and silverware moving by themselves and hearing voices within.
5. Eliza Bowen Jumel House
Eliza Bowen Jumel was an accomplished social climber during her lifetime, using both body and mind to advance herself in society. An illiterate when she first arrived in New York City as Betsey Bowen, Eliza eventually rose through the ranks to become a powerful business and political strategist.
In 1810, she purchased the Morris-Jumel Mansion with her French immigrant husband. Following his death in 1832, she married former Vice President Aaron Burr.
Madame Jumel is said to haunt her old house and can sometimes be heard warning children who make too much noise, according to several witnesses.
6. DeFeo House
Ronald DeFeo murdered six members of his own family at his notorious house, making headlines around the world and inspiring numerous books and movies about it. However, only for 28 days did Lutz family reside there before fleeing due to disturbing paranormal activity.
Machpelah Cemetery in Queens is home to Harry Houdini’s final resting place, as well as one of New York City’s haunted places. Visitors have reported hearing strange noises and seeing unexplainable lights there.
7. Utica State Hospital
Utica State Hospital was opened for business in 1843 as one of the earliest state-run mental healthcare facilities. Over time, urban explorers and visitors to this institution have reported seeing ghostly apparitions, hearing disembodied voices whispering strange phrases, feeling anxiousness or experiencing feelings of unease upon visiting its campus.
Yoko Ono claimed she saw John Lennon’s ghost playing the piano at The Dakota, an iconic building featured in Roman Polanski’s Rosemary’s Baby. Other reported sightings at The Dakota include an elderly lady crying and an apparently-ghostly child.
8. Washington Square Park
Washington Square Park in New York City is widely considered to be one of the city’s most haunted places, having once served as a smallpox hospital and boasting over 22 gravesites on its grounds. Furthermore, Hangman’s Elm, one of its famously haunted elm trees can often be found nearby.
