Haunted Places in Tennessee

Tennessee is famous for its whiskey, music industry and Southern charm – not to mention a number of haunted locations that draw dark tourism enthusiasts from across America. If you’re in search of thrills then Tennessee offers plenty!

Adams is home to The Bell Witch Cave – a haunted location where people have reported seeing ghost animals, hearing strange noises and even sensing an impending presence! A woman scorned can become violently upset.

Rotherwood Mansion

Rotherwood Mansion in Kingsport is an elegant plantation home situated along the North Fork of Holston River and was constructed by Reverend Frederick Ross who founded Kingsport. Reverend Ross lavished gifts upon his daughter Rowena while providing her with access to some of the best schools. Unfortunately, tragedy struck when Rowena fell in love with someone from another well-connected family and ultimately had to leave school before finishing college.

Phipps was planning on marrying his intended, until the Civil War broke out and her suitor had to go off to battle instead. Unfortunately, Phipps would succumb to fever; after his death it is said he can still be heard roaming around on stormy nights giving off an unpleasant laughter as well as taking away bed covers from guests sleeping there.

Loretta Lynn Ranch

Loretta Lynn owns a ranch that boasts many attractions for visitors to enjoy – yet there is also a mysterious backstory associated with the property – according to reports, it may also be haunted by various spirits such as Civil War soldiers or even an unseen woman in white who haunts it.

Lynn has revealed to a Travel Channel show that she and her family have experienced numerous ghostly experiences at home, believing she has psychic abilities and communicated with some of the ghosts present.

She claims her family have been able to inform her of some of the spirits who reside within their home that are upset with her, such as when they move or adjust picture frames. They have even witnessed a Civil War soldier on the property and heard cannon fire noises!

Bijou Theatre

Ghosts may appear anywhere, but certain locations seem especially inviting to ghostly visitations. Theatres in Knoxville are particularly known to attract ghostly presence; one theater manager told us that she puts an upright pole containing a single lightbulb onto the stage after each performance ends in order to dissuade ghosts that come roaming after audiences have gone home. This light is not intended as illumination but as a means of driving them away!

The Bijou stands as an exceptional example. Once known as Lamar House, its unique history includes serving an eclectic range of clients that has included Civil War hospitals, brothels and adult movie houses during its long history. Experts agree that most haunted locations stem from trauma; thus the Bijou certainly boasts plenty of it!

Sevierville

Tennessee may bring to mind visions of whiskey, vibrant music scene and iconic American landmarks; yet it is also one of America’s most haunted states.

Dolly Parton’s former home has long been associated with paranormal activity. Visitors have reported hearing chains rattling, witnessing ghostly figures, and experiencing other creepy happenings there.

Carnton Mansion has a tragic past. When its previous owners lived here, one of their daughters named Rowena became wheelchair-bound after suffering through heartbreak with her first love. Feeling hopeless, depressed and sad she committed suicide which is now said to haunt the home with reports of screaming heard throughout its hallways.

Wheatland Plantation

With over 70 murders and deaths at this home in Tennessee, it has a reputation as being haunted. Visitors have reported hearing laughter after dark as well as seeing a woman dressed all in white wandering the property.

The house is also said to be haunted by Rowena, who murdered her family and herself in 1820. Her ghost has been seen roaming its grounds which were battlegrounds during both Revolutionary and Civil Wars; blood stains have even been seen on parlor floorboards from when one father was killed by his son.

Tennessee is well known for its country music scene, barbecue cuisine and haunted history – with sites like Bell Witch Cave, Rotherwood Mansion and Loretta Lynn Ranch being some of the many haunted locations within its borders.
