The Most Haunted Places in the World

From haunted castles to churches full of skeletons, these places will give you chills. Explore them yourself on lantern-lit ghost tours or try catching sight of Anne Boleyn or one of her former slaves (perhaps Anne Bonny is present?) as she often encourages climbers at Mount Everest.

1. Gettysburg

Gettysburg’s bloody Battle of Gettysburg made it an ideal location for ghost hunters and paranormal researchers. Paranormal activity appears most concentrated around Devil’s Den, used as a sniper’s nest during its course.

This region is also home to an ethereal Lady in White who has struck fear into many. Farnsworth House Inn has also been reported as haunted, where guests have reported hearing voices and seeing bloodsplatters.

2. The Pine Barrens

The Pine Barrens in New Jersey is an expansive wilderness known for its distinctive ecosystem and haunting beauty. Additionally, this dense forest hosts many abandoned ghost towns left to crumble away and be claimed by nature’s embrace.

Famously known for being home of the legendary Jersey Devil – an entity believed to possess hooves and wings – as well as being haunted by an unsettling presence reminiscent of an innocent child hit-and-run victim, there’s also a legend surrounding a ghostly figure said to haunt the area: that of Little Billy from hit-and-run victimization.

3. The RMS Queen Mary

RMS Queen Mary was once revered as an epitome of grandeur and luxury; today it’s also famous for being home to an estimated 150 spirits that haunt its rooms and corridors – leading many tourists to regularly report sightings!

John Pedder’s ghost can often be seen at the hotel during fire drills; guests have reported being startled awake to find their bedcovers torn off or faucets turning themselves on by themselves.

4. Aokigahara

Aokigahara Forest in Japan is notorious for its connection to suicide since the 1960s. Due to this association, visitors to Aokigahara have often attempted suicide here, drawing tourists wanting to explore this dark and haunting spot.

Due to hardened lava that once covered this forest, many trees now bear exotic, gnarled features. Furthermore, due to magnetic iron content of its soil composition, compasses and GPS don’t work reliably in this region.

5. Akershus Festning

This ancient church in Nes, Norway is believed to be haunted by numerous sinister spirits – from priests who hanged themselves to infant corpses found beneath its altar, this place has seen it all and more! It truly stands as an eerie witness of history.

Built in the 13th century, Akershus Festning has served as a royal residence, military base and prison over its long history. It has witnessed many battles and long sieges and now hosts both the Norwegian Armed Forces Museum and Resistance Museum as well as government events and celebrations.

6. The Convent of St Agnes

Few buildings and locations are as haunted as Prague’s Convent of St Agnes, said to be haunted by a murdered nun clad in green dress who frequently reappears.

Other ghosts have also been seen roaming the grounds, such as an unseen monk who walks directly past churchgoers. Additionally, Poveglia Island once served as a mental hospital where doctors practiced crude lobotomies on patients; today it remains off limits to visitors.

7. Corvin Castle

Corvin Castle is well known for its grandiose architecture; however, it also holds an unsavoury past. Some believe that Vlad the Impaler – our real life Dracula – went mad after spending seven years imprisoned here listening to fellow prisoners being tortured or put into bear pits.

Due to its history and association with vampires, this castle is an increasingly popular haunted destination. Rumors swirl about that it could even be home to ghostly inhabitants – including that of a murdered nun rumored to be haunting it!

8. The Monastery of Unterzell

Visitors have reported multiple ghostly experiences at the monastery, such as doors banging shut and whispered whispers; staff have even reported being startled by an appearance of a small girl who follows them around.

The Monastery of Unterzell was once a convent and is thought to be haunted by Maria Renata Singer von Mossau, its former superior who frequently appears wearing her green dress and appears during ghost tours through its castle grounds. Her ghost has even been reported in mirrors!
