Georgia’s history is rich with tales of ghostly activity, from legends to real hauntings. You’ll find everything from ghostly figures at The Pirate’s House in Savannah to mysterious happenings at Fox Theatre; all provide plenty of spine-chilling experiences.
Georgia has endured much hardship during its history, from Civil War battles and events to Trail of Tears tragedy and yellow fever epidemics – creating an atmosphere of Grade A creepiness.
The Pirate’s House
Savannah’s pirate-themed eatery is notoriously haunted. Tavern fights, murders and drunken brawls have occurred here over time and their ghosts still roam free here today. Visitors have reported hearing strange noises or seeing ghostly figures while dining there; local policemen even allegedly witnessed visions of men carrying an intoxicated person down into its basement area.
Rhodes Hall has become well-known due to its appearances on various paranormal shows and has become the site of numerous ghost encounters by visitors. Rhodes Hall hides a dark secret beneath its charming exterior: former residents and patients who passed during Civil War and Yellow Fever epidemics have left ghostly remains behind, along with shadowy figures and doors opening on their own, which many visitors report encountering here. Guests have reported experiencing unsettling crashing noises, the smell of decayed flesh, shadowy figures appearing suddenly before opening doorways opening up themselves; guests have reported feeling nervously watching while entering and exiting without understanding what’s happened!
Old Candler Hospital
Georgia is well-known for its haunted houses and mental institutions, with Old Candler Hospital as one such haunted site which has been featured in paranormal investigations, documentaries and books on haunted places.
Hospitals are believed to be haunted by the ghosts of past patients who remain active, both remaining as an imprint from their past but also actively engaging with those who visit. It is said that patients’ spirits often act like both residual and intelligent entities – acting not just like ghosts but as living entities who interact with those visiting and actively contributing towards patient care.
One of the more well-known ghosts residing here is “Little Gracie.” She can often be found hanging from trees on the grounds, crying tears of blood as she weeps her heartbreak away. Little Gracie has become an ever-popular sight on ghost tours!
The Marshall House Hotel
Visitors of The Marshall House regularly report hearing the laughter and playful voices of ghost children lingering within the hotel, particularly room 306 where noise complaints have been lodged by previous guests.
The Marshall House Hotel was constructed in 1851 and is known to be one of Savannah’s most haunted hotels. Serving as a Civil War hospital and going through two yellow fever outbreaks, its ghostly inhabitants can often be heard here – guests have reported hearing taps turning on unexpectedly, doors slamming shut or hearing other unexplainable noises during their stay here.
Many guests have reported seeing ghostly figures reminiscent of Civil War soldiers wandering the hallways at Marshall House Hotel and some have even witnessed one holding onto their severed arm, asking for assistance reattaching it. Ghost tours frequently visit this hotel which also happens to be home to author Joel Chandler Harris (known for writing Uncle Remus stories).
Moon River Brewing Company
Moon River Brewing Company in Savannah, Georgia is an elegant building dating back to the 1800s that is said to have an abundance of ghostly activity – both employees and patrons have reported frequent sightings at this bar/restaurant/brewery. Many believe it to be haunted.
Moon River Brewing Company is famous for being haunted by James Stark, a gambler shot on its main floor by town physician Phillip Minis and who now haunts it in his ghost form.
