The United States offers plenty of spine-chilling destinations. From haunted hotels to creepy mansions, there are numerous places that will leave the hairs standing up on your neck.
Saratoga Springs is an iconic vacation destination known for its historic architecture and bustling downtown, but also renowned as one of America’s most haunted locations. Visitors have reported hearing strange noises or seeing ghostly figures here–even the ghost of Redd Foxx himself has been reported!
Mount Misery Road
There are many spooky tales surrounding this road. Many of these legends can be traced back to when Native American tribes inhabited this area and believed negative forces had taken control of the land to kill their livestock and crops. There were even reports of a mental hospital being burned down in the 1800s that might have connected with stories about The Lady in White – an archetype often associated with haunted places.
Chuck Morrongiello was inspired by these legends to create Amityville: Misery Road on a low budget using minimal equipment and actors – truly an independent filmmaker’s story, as it provides inspiration to others to follow their dreams. Already garnering distribution rights, it will be released early 2018 featuring Charlie and Buzi, two young lovers who decide to explore Mt Misery Road despite warnings of Hell Hounds and Crazy Mary who live there.
Letchworth Village
Letchworth Village in Haverstraw is widely considered to be one of the most haunted locations in New York. Once known as a hospital, visitors have reported hearing noises like screaming and knocking, being pushed or pulled by unseen forces, capturing shadow figures on camera footage, as well as even being attacked by ghostly figures!
The hospital was initially constructed as an ideal facility in the early 1900s. Unfortunately, overcrowding and negative accusations soon undermined its quality of care, prompting stories of patient mistreatment and abuse to surface.
Buildings gradually fell into disrepair over time and eventually closed their doors in 1996. Since then, this property has become a state park where visitors are free to freely stroll its grounds (it’s especially popular among dog walkers!) and explore its many unusual structures – though please remember it’s against the law to enter any buildings; security patrols the grounds regularly.
Kings Park Psychiatric Facility
Kings Park Psychiatric Facility in New York City is one of the scariest haunted places around. Many believe that spirits from former patients may still roam these abandoned grounds, leaving visitors feeling dizzy, afraid and abandoned – visitors have even reported dizziness and fear when visiting this haunted site with its three cemeteries and reported experiences like dizziness, fear and abandonment during visits here.
At its height, this facility served thousands of patients. These individuals were subjected to harsh treatments including frontal lobotomies and electroshock therapy before eventually closing due to better treatments offered by modern medicine for mental illness.
Today, the site serves as a hike-bike trail and some of its buildings have been converted to group homes for the mentally ill; trespassing on this property is illegal and visitors have reported seeing ghost-like figures or hearing disembodied screams; moreover, many horror films such as 2009’s Blood Night and 2010’s Peripheral Vision have used it as their setting.
14 West 10th Street
House at 14 West 10th Street in New York City is an exquisite Greek Revival brownstone. Unfortunately, though its aesthetic appeal may not do justice to its real life reputation: this place has earned itself the unfortunate moniker: House of Death due to reports of 22 ghostly inhabitants including author Mark Twain’s spirit who resided at 14 West 10th Street from 1900 – 1901.
House was converted to apartments in 1937. One of the earliest residents after conversion was an actress-turned-psychic named Jan Bryant Bartell who would write a book detailing her experiences living alongside ghosts at residence.
Twain’s ghost may still haunt his home and surrounding grounds. Additionally, other spirits reportedly present include a woman dressed all in white, two children and an uneasy grey cat. Paranormal investigators have reported experiencing supernatural phenomena at this location including voices calling out for assistance as well as the sound of screeching stairs.
