Some people enjoy being scared, and may visit haunted places to test their nerves. Others, however, may avoid such items altogether.
Central State Hospital in Pendleton is one of the most haunted places in Indiana. Although considered humane by modern standards, many individuals were mistreated here and many abuse victims suffered at its hands.
Cry Baby Bridge
In the early 1950s, an unwed mother driving over this bridge threw her baby from the car onto it, which died instantly upon impact. According to legend, people still claim they hear its cries at night.
Some believe that if you park your car near the bridge and turn off its engine at midnight, an old antebellum lady may cross the road. Others have reported seeing white mist rise up from underneath it before drifting towards your car when shining headlights onto it.
Maud Hughes Road Bridge in Salem, Ohio has long been considered one of the most haunted places in Ohio. Stories regarding its mysterious past range from a mother killing her baby before hanging herself to reports about an unknown cult performing animal sacrifices nearby.
Hays Cemetery
Hays Cemetery in Indiana is considered one of the most haunted spots. Legend has it that Gypsies were mistreated in this area and cursed it – leading to sightings of ghostly apparitions and people reporting smelling perfume or hearing voices; some have even reported seeing doors being shut slammed shut in this cemetery!
Another supposedly haunted place in Indiana is the Tunnelton Tunnel. This spot is popular with ghost hunters and said to be haunted by a ghostly farmer, as well as other strange apparitions appearing at night on its roadway. Some have even labeled this location the most haunted location in Clay County.
Silver Memories was established during the late 1800’s. Since its construction, staff members have witnessed mysterious happenings at this nursing home such as call lights in empty rooms ringing out unexpectedly or hearing children playing nearby. Many believe that ghosts of former residents may still haunt this building and one such spirit allegedly weeps at his gravesite – another reported phenomenon is hearing voices calling out for help in empty rooms from time to time.
Whispers Estate
Whispers Estate, situated on Indiana’s west-central coast, is widely considered to be one of the state’s most haunted locations. This was named for disembodied whispers heard during renovations that could not be explained away by sound alone. Individuals who have resided here have reported being watched, experiencing strange tremors, and door handles moving.
Many believe the ghost of a young girl, who died due to injuries she caused while starting a fire in the front parlor, haunts this home. Many individuals have reported hearing her singing “Ring Around the Rosie” from within it.
Morgan-Monroe State Forest in Martinsville is home to an eerie cemetery called Morgan-Monroe Cemetery. Rumor has it that at night the ghost of a woman would come here and dig up her dead children’s bones from here and rebury them there before disappearing again into darkness. Additionally, it’s said that suicide victims’ spirits reside there as well.
James Allison Mansion
James Allison founded both Allison Engineering Company and Indianapolis Motor Speedway; thus this mansion was constructed without expense in 1914 by him, featuring an expansive great hall, marble aviary, music room with two-story pipe organ, library, indoor pool and many bedrooms – guests have reported hearing strange sounds as well as feeling being watched while staying here.
The Slippery Noodle Inn has served as a bar, restaurant, theater and stop on the Underground Railroad since 1975. Additionally, its location is said to be haunted by an unseen figure who haunts it, prompting toilets to flush and water faucets to turn on – believed to be that of a fireman who died while fighting a blaze here in 1992.
The Willard Library in Evansville is one of Indiana’s most haunted places, and is said to be home to the Grey Lady ghost. Her presence can often be found causing lights and faucets to flicker or turning on by themselves, sometimes appearing even in elevators! She seems particularly fond of visiting red hallway, which remains off limits at all times.
